STAR Answering
Useful for your upcoming interview track
Structured answers are how hiring managers compare candidates. STAR keeps you specific when the prompt is wide.
Situation — one breath
Company, team, constraint. No origin story.
Task — the job that was yours
What you were accountable for, not the team’s collective goal.
Action — verbs and decisions
What you chose, who you aligned, what you cut. Avoid “we”.
Result — a number and a learning
Revenue, time, quality, risk avoided. Then one sentence on what you would repeat.
Drill
Write one STAR card for a failed launch. Lead with the result in the first sentence of the Result.
Knowledge check
The interviewer asks “tell me about a time you influenced without authority.” What is the first line?
A one-line situation plus the decision you needed someone else to make.
